St Augustine’s Parish will celebrate the 180th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of its first church, on August 27, 1838 by Bishop Polding. This church has recently been renovated and is now known as the Lovat Chapel, after the first parish priest, Father Charles Lovat (1799-1858)
In three days of celebration, there will be a parish dinner on Friday 24 August, a musical concert on Saturday 25 August and a Concelebrated Mass with Archbishop Christopher Prowse, Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Father Mick Burke, Parish Priest and several priests of the parish from the past.
A newly published book, Fr Charles Lovat: “Shepherds of Shepherds”, First Parish of Yass NSW 1839-1849, by Peggy Jones, edited by Peter R. Bindon and Anthony J MacQuillan (2018), will be launched during the celebrations. Buildings will be open to visitors and there will be displays of historical material.
