There’s no doubt we Aussies love our food, especially when traveling and there’s an opportunity to try a fresh, local delicacy. Whether it’s baked goods, local produce, fresh seafood, or award-winning wine the options are endless when exploring our regional foodie culture.

Sometimes though, sitting down and enjoying a meal just isn’t enough. Do you want to recreate a local meal, develop a new skill or learn more about the process of paddock to plate on your next trip? To help you out we’ve put together a list of food experiences that in our opinion are a must-do on any trip.

Have a taste

If you love your wines or want to branch out and taste something new visiting a local cellar is a great way to sample everything on offer. You might even take home a bottle or two. You’ll find it all in NSW’s wine regions, from large scale productions to boutique wineries.

When staying at our Cudgegong park visit the Mudgee regions finest cellars and discover what Australia’s top foodies are talking about.

Or venture into Australia’s oldest wine region in the Hunter Valley to discover old and new winemakers when staying a Lake Glenbawn, Hawks Nest or Jimmys Beach.

people enjoying a cooking class

Get in the kitchen

Want to do more than sit down for a meal? Increase your skills and have hands-on cooking experience by taking a cooking class. A class will give you an opportunity to become your own chef. You’ll walk away with tricks for handling produce and a recipe card so you can cook again at home!

The Hunter Valley and Mudgee wine regions are a great spot to take a class and pair your food with the best wine.

If you’re staying at our Byron Bay park, then you can’t go past Bhavana Organic Farm and Cooking School for a fully immersive cooking experience.

We also think it’s worth dropping into The Cheesemaking Workshop and Deli when visiting The Big Banana in the North Coast region. You could be whipping savory ricotta in under an hour!

Take a tour

The process from paddock to plate can be a bit of a mystery to many. There’s no better way to grow your understanding and witness Australian innovation first-hand than by taking a tour of a farm, brewery, or anything in between.

If you’re planning a trip to the South Coast you can’t go past an oyster farm tour like Wapengo Rock near Bermagui or Magic Oyster Tours in Pambula.

Planning on heading up to the Far North Coast? Stay at our Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Shaws Bay, and Ballina Parks, and Go Behind the Barrel to learn about the distillery process for beers and spirits at some of the best distilleries and breweries on offer along the Ballina Coast.
